Nagarkot named as “Mandapgiri” in the ancient time is also a place related with the myth of Ratna Chudeswor Mahadev and Maha-Manju shree. Before the unification of Nepal by king Prithivi Narayan Shah(PNS), it was the kingdom ruled by the king of Tamang (Ghising) dynasty. As Nagarkot is second highest point around Kathmandu valley, it was strategically important during unification campaign, so king PNS attacked here many times and later only had a victory and made a conspiracy to win Kathmandu valley from here.

After the victory upon this area king PNS handed over this area to king of Bhaktapur. Later the king of Bhaktapur developed this area as an arsenal of Bhaktapur and after this Nagarkot got the present name.

Being the ideal place for savoring the splendors of great Himalayas, natural beauty. It is believed that Ranas camped here to escape from the heat on summer, during Rana regime.

Though Nagarkot was originally developed as an army camp and tourist facilities came later with the government encouragement. Tourist started to arrive in Nagarkot since 1960’s and still it is most favorite hill station among the domestic and international visitors.
